1) How do I install YO VOCAB BASIC (U.S. or U.K. Edition)?

Go to Top

Before installing, check the System Requirements and the available disk space.

YO VOCAB BASIC is available in the U.S. and U.K. English editions. The name of the setup file for the U.S. English edition is YOVOCABBASICUS.exe, while that for the U.K. English edition is YOVOCABBASICUK.exe.

Installation from a downloaded setup

1.

Download and save the YOVOCABBASICUS.exe or YOVOCABBASICUK.exe file.

2.

Locate the YOVOCABBASICUS.exe or YOVOCABBASICUK.exe file saved on your system.

3.

Double-click the YOVOCABBASICUS.exe or YOVOCABBASICUK.exe file to start the installation.

Once you finish installing YO VOCAB BASIC, a shortcut icon     followed by (U.S. Edition) or (U.K. Edition) is created on the desktop. Additionally, you can also access the software by following the steps below:

  • Click the Start button on Windows, point to Programs, select Remittag, select YO VOCAB, and click BASIC (U.S. Edition) or BASIC (U.K. Edition).

The default path where the software is installed is C:\Program Files\Remittag\YO VOCAB\BASIC-US or C:\Program Files\Remittag\YO VOCAB\BASIC-UK, where C: will be replaced with the letter of your system drive.

Note:
  • The setup program will issue a number of prompts. Unless you have a reason to overwrite the defaults, it is strongly recommended that you accept the default settings during the installation.
  • The software does not support the Compatibility Mode feature of Windows* XP. Hence, it is recommended that you do not change the default settings. To confirm this, right-click on the shortcut icon on your desktop, click Properties, and click on the Compatibility tab. The Run this program in compatibility mode for check box should be unchecked.

3) How should I use the Start Word Game - Multiple Choice dialog box?

Go to Top

1.

From the Game menu, click on the Multiple Choice menu item, or click on the Multiple Choice button on the Main Screen. The Start Word Game - Multiple Choice dialog box is displayed.

2.

Select an Age Group (if required). For example, General, Juniors, or Seniors.

3.

Select a Subject (if required). For example, History, Geography, Science, and so on.

4.

Select a Difficulty Level (if required). For example: Low, Normal, or High.

Note: You can select any combination of Age Group and Subject for your search. However, a Difficulty Level can only be
selected separately, as the Difficulty Level is not dependent on either an Age Group or a Subject. Also note that it is not
mandatory for you to select one or more classifications, and you are free to leave these blank. In fact, leaving one or more
classifications blank will result in a wider selection of vocabulary items.

5.

Using the Advanced Search field, you can refine your search criteria to bring forth specific vocabulary items. This is made possible by combining specific letters with wildcard characters such as '*' and ‘?', and the SPACE key. For example, you could search for all vocabulary items beginning with the letter ‘a’, by typing ‘a*’; or you could search for all five letter vocabulary items, by typing ‘?????’.

The SPACE key represents an OR condition. Use the SPACE key between your search characters or conditions to look for vocabulary items that fulfill either the first condition OR the second condition. For example, searching for a*(SPACE key)b* will find vocabulary items starting with either 'a' OR 'b', for example: ajar, aisle, abaca, babble, babouche etc.

Do also note that you can combine the Advanced Search field with the Age Group, Subject, or Difficulty Level fields. Doing so may result in fewer vocabulary items being brought forth. In such a case, revise your selection criteria.

6.

The Time per Vocabulary Item field represents the time given to you to provide a correct answer, per vocabulary item. You can change the default time (30 seconds) by typing any value between 15 to 60 seconds in this field.

7.

Clear the Play Background Music check box if you do not want to hear the background music associated with the game. The Play Background Music check box is selected by default.

8.

Click OK to start the game. A maximum of ten vocabulary items, depending on the search criteria, are brought forth.

Note:
  • To clear all fields and cancel selections, click Reset.
  • Not entering/selecting any fields from the Start Word Game - Multiple Choice dialog box will bring forth vocabulary items based on all criteria.

4) Can I change the default time for a game?

Go to Top

Yes. In the Start Word Game - Multiple Choice dialog box, there is a Time per Vocabulary Item option. This option represents the time given to you to provide a correct answer, per vocabulary item.

You can change the default time (30 seconds) by typing any value between 15 to 60 seconds in this field.

5) Can I disable the background music while playing a game?

Go to Top

Yes. In the Start Word Game - Multiple Choice dialog box, there is a Play Background Music option. This option allows you to enable or disable the background music for a game, and is selected by default.

Alternatively, you can also enable or disable background music while playing a game. The game screen has a music icon. Click the icon to enable or disable music while playing the game.

Note: No options are provided for disabling the applause and regret sound files.

6) Why does the next vocabulary item not come forth?

Go to Top

If you provide an incorrect answer, or run out of time in the Multiple Choice game format, there is no change of the vocabulary item until you click the Next button. This is to allow you to review the correct answer.

7) Why do I sometimes get less than ten vocabulary items in a game?

Go to Top

Depending upon your selection criteria in the Advanced Search field, you may face less than ten vocabulary items.

In fact, if you make too many selections, you may not face any vocabulary items at all! For example, if you select Juniors as the Age Group, Subject as Law, and enter a combination of wildcard characters and the SPACE key, you are likely to face very few or no vocabulary items at all.

If your selection does not bring forth any vocabulary items, you will encounter the following message:

'Please make a new selection, as no vocabulary items were found for your current selection'.

In such a case, you will need to revise your selection.

8) Why do I see some vocabulary items repeated across games?

Go to Top

Vocabulary items across games could be repeated in two situations:

1. When you exit YO VOCAB BASIC and return later, since YO VOCAB BASIC keeps a track of the vocabulary items for the
    current game session only.

2. When the vocabulary list satisfying your search criteria gets exhausted within a game session.

Go to Top

  • If you select Summary and More, you will see the Summary and More dialog box.

  • If you click End Game and Show Answer, it displays the answer for the current vocabulary item and ends the game.

  • If you click Close, the game will close and you will return to the main screen.

14) Why does my Performance Report show more than one set of scores?

Go to Top

Where you have played a game with incorrect answers, the Performance Report will display the performance of all such games along with the performance of the last game.

15) Why do the Header/Footer changes not appear on all the reports?

Go to Top

The Header and Footer can be customized from the Tools menu. The changes will reflect only in the Performance Report, Quiz Cards, and the Snap Cards Reference Sheet.
